Buff Program In 2010 we hatched out early cockerels but late pullets. Unfortunately, our pullets are still in grow out pens and will not start to lay for a few months. We will use our one hen for breeding this winter/spring and will add the pullets in once they mature. Since there is such a shortage of bantam buff in the US, we are striving to increase our buff flock and our gene pool. This 2011 spring we will be producing pure, 7/8, 3/4, & 1/2 buffs from our breeding pens.

Pure hen and pure pullet with a 3/4 buff male. This pen will produce 7/8 pure offspring.
1/2 Buff Offspring These two buff males are rotating in 3 wheaten pens to produce 1/2 buff offspring.
This male is penned with two 1/2 buff females. This pen will produce 3/4 buff offspring. (photo of 1/2 females coming soon)

3/4 Buff Offspring
7/8 Buff Offspring
1/2 buff offspring will be bred back to pure buff in the 2012 breeding season. The results of that breeding will be 3/4 buff.
Wheaten is the best cross to use when expanding the buff gene pool. Buff is dominant over wheaten so the offspring will be mostly feathered in buff. There will be a little bit of black in the tail and wings.
Wheaten hens with very little black in their tails and wings make the best choices for a buff / wheaten cross program. |

1/2 Buff Chick Notice how the chick down is very similar to a pure buff chick down. The difference is seen in the wing feathering. The wings show a bit of black from the wheaten.
